Teens to build Teesside turbines

16 February 2011

Tees Valley secondary school students explore environmental and climate change issues in practical workshops here at Teesside.

The workshops are to be delivered by the University’s Clean Environment Management Centre (CLEMANCE).

The 30 year nine students (aged 13 to 14) start with a lecture covering environmental issues and how Teesside University is helping to solve these problems.

There are two interactive workshops, one looking at the energy efficiency of hydrogen cars and the other showing how a wind turbine generates electricity.

Workshops are hands on as students:

>build a hydrogen car - looking at alternative ways to power cars and race hydrogen powered cars.

>build a wind turbine - in groups of five students build a wind turbine from scratch, learning how they work and how the energy they produce is used.

Sue Turner, Schools & Colleges Assistant, said: 'Environmental and climate change issues are frequently in the news. This timely hands-on activity day gives students the opportunity to look at solutions to the issues facing our planet and work in teams in a practical and fun manner.'

The students are from Northfield in Billingham, Oakfields in Middlesbrough, MacMillan College in Middlesbrough, Freebrough Academy in East Cleveland, Bydales in Marske.
