Scott’s winning design for health message on the web

28 November 2000

Students at the University of Teesside can now log on to a special web site to find out more about Meningitis - thanks in part to the work of Computing graduate, Scott Layton.

Scott, 24, from Laburnum Road, Redcar, graduates with a BSc (Hons) in Information Society (on Wednesday 22 Nov at 1.15pm). His winning design for the University’s Meningitis Awareness web site can be found at http://meningitis.tees.ac.uk

Scott is the son of Anne and Brian. He went to Sacred Heart School and then to Cleveland College of FE in Redcar to study business computing before enrolling at the University of Teesside.

He now works for a local software development and consultancy company, Excel-Sys, as an analyst/programmer and said: “In designing the Meningitis web site my priority was to make it look appealing to students, especially Freshers. The design needed to be simple, yet informative, and easy on the eye so that people would read it. Important considerations were navigation and the structure of the site because finding information as easily as possible was the main goal. What pleased me most was that I was able to incorporate all these objectives and still make the site look interesting.”

The site was launched during the University’s Meningitis Awareness Week in October. Jean Hall, the University’s Student Health Advisor, said: “We wanted to have an accessible means of communicating with staff and students in the event of an outbreak of meningitis on campus and Scott’s design was the most user-friendly. It incorporates an illustrated guide to the symptoms and provides advice on what to do if you suspect you may have the disease."
