Celebrating our musical heritage

Where can you see footage of the Beatles being interviewed in the North East during the early 1960s? The rise of disco and punk in this region in the 1970s? Or an interview with Morrissey in 1985?

This diverse musical mix is part of a free film show to be screened at Teesside University on Tuesday 27 September. Entitled ‘Musical Youth - From The Beatles to The Smiths’, it will be screened from 12.30pm to 2.00pm, in room CG.26 in the University’s Constantine Building.

This footage, all originally screened by Tyne Tees Television, is held by the Northern Region Film & Television Archive (NRFTA), part of Teesside University.

David Parsons, Film Archivist, said: 'This free event is the first of a series of screenings planned throughout the year and is aimed at introducing students, researchers and members of staff to the NRFTA and its collections.

'This show looks at music and youth culture in the North East from the 1960’s to the 1990’s. There’ll be interviews with The Fab Four in the early 1960’s at the start of their career and other news stories made by Tyne Tees relating to North East youth from Beat groups to school discipline. From the 1970s there’s the development of disco and punk in the region with extracts from ‘Alright Now’, their youth programme.

'You can also see an interview with Morrissey and watch The Smiths perform as part of the flagship music programme ‘The Tube’ in 1985. We will finish with the all-time classic North East anthem ‘Fog of the Tyne’ by Lindisfarne sung in 1990 by Paul Gascoigne.'
