Scholarship helped support Sarah in her studies

11 November 2011

Securing a scholarship helped Sarah Hall design her future career path.

Achieving good results in her college studies before starting a BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Teesside University led Sarah to receive a scholarship of £1,000 for each year of the degree course she went on to complete.

Sarah, 21, of Redcar, who graduates this year, said: 'I didn’t really know much about scholarships before I came to Teesside and I was really pleased to find out I was to receive for £1,000 each year of my degree, thanks to the results of the BTEC art and design I completed at Redcar and Cleveland College.

'It was marvellous to find out I was being awarded the scholarship and I was surprised to discover it was such a significant amount. It was spread out over three payments each year. I put it towards materials for my graphic design degree.'

She added: 'It really made a difference and I really feel I would have struggled otherwise. It helped that I had this money available which I was able to put aside when I needed art materials, sketchpads or other supplies. I know of other people who received scholarships who put the money towards computer software, so they could do their degree work at home.'

In the current economic climate securing a scholarship can make a real difference in providing additional funds to make study even better value. Teesside University is offering 350 extra scholarships for new full-time undergraduate students in 2012 - in addition to 200 national scholarships.

The 350 scholarships will be available for new entrants in 2012 to undergraduate programmes where fees above £5,500 are payable. These will be in the form of a £1,500 fee-waiver for each year of study throughout the course.

Scholarships will be available to students who have an excellent academic record or are in receipt of Disabled Students Allowance. 200 students will receive a national scholarship of a fee waiver of £3,000 in the first year plus a cash bursary of £1,000 in three instalments.

Sarah added: 'Receiving the scholarship really raised my awareness of their availability and since coming to study at Teesside I’ve discovered much more about them. It is worth trying to find out what you might qualify or be eligible for. You don’t want to be missing out on something which can be a great help.'
