17 November 2011

Congratulations to all of our graduates, their families and friends. Nearly 4,000 graduates and 7,800 guests will gather at Middlesbrough Town Hall this week to celebrate the University’s annual academic awards ceremonies.

A record 13 ceremonies For the first time, a record 13 ceremonies will take place over the five days, with awards ranging from foundation degrees to undergraduate degrees, master’s and doctorates. This year has been a particularly special one for the University, with the opening of our new £13m campus in Darlington.

All of this week’s graduates will be congratulated on stage by either the University’s Chancellor, Lord Sawyer of Darlington, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Henderson CBE or the Pro-Chancellor, Sandy Anderson OBE.

Seven leading individuals During the week, seven honorary degrees will also be awarded to leading individuals at separate ceremonies, two on the Wednesday, three on the Thursday and two on the Friday. This year’s honorary graduates will include Paralympic gold-winning athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and Saltburn-born NASA astronaut Dr Nicholas Patrick. All will give speeches at their ceremonies.

Professor Graham Henderson, Vice-Chancellor said, 'The whole University community is delighted that our new graduates and their guests will be joining us for our annual graduation celebrations at the Town Hall.

'Our graduates worked hard to achieve their success, and deserve the opportunity that these ceremonies give them to celebrate their achievements. I am very much looking forward to congratulating them, and paying tribute to their families, partners and friends for all of the vital support they will have given to the graduates while they were studying with us.'

All of the graduations can be watched live on the Big Screen in Centre Square, Middlesbrough and on our website.
