An LLM of distinction for legal eagle Clare

18 November 2011

Clare French has a keen passion for law and has secured a training contract at Dickinson Dees solicitors.

In 2009 Clare achieved a first class law degree from Teesside University. She then progressed to the Legal Practice Course (LPC) at York College of Law the following year, which, after completing her training contract at Dickinson Dees, will make her a qualified solicitor.

Clare returned to Teesside and now graduates with a LLM (Criminal Law) degree, for which she gained a distinction.

Clare, 23, from Redcar, started work as a trainee solicitor with Dickinson Dees at its Stockton office this September. She was awarded the training contract in the final year of her first Teesside degree.

The place was achieved after Clare won a negotiating competition set by the firm, with a training contract interview and work experience the winning prizes.

Course was interesting and varied Clare, who is the first in her family to go to University, said: ‘I wanted to study for the LLM as it explores contemporary legal issues such as unlawful killing. The whole course was so interesting and varied.

‘It has also further developed my research and presentation skills and time management, making me feel more confident which I can carry into my traineeship. It was really nice to get a distinction, to be rewarded for everything I’ve done.’

With her two-year training contract, Clare will spend six months working in four different departments, known as ‘seats’, the first being litigation.

Clare added: ‘I wouldn’t have got to where I am without Teesside University. The careers service was particularly helpful with their advice in preparing for interviews. This job has surpassed all my expectations, there’s variety, it’s hands on with a lot of client contact.’
