It’s back to school for Andrew the day after graduation

Andrew Simpson enjoyed one of the proudest moments of his life when he graduated with a BSc (Hons) Computing and Networks.

But there was no time to revel in his achievement – for the day after graduating, Andrew was back at school, starting work as an ICT Technician and Student Teacher at St Patrick’s Catholic College in Thornaby.

Andrew, 22, from the Acklam area of Middlesbrough, came to Teesside University because of its strong reputation for computing and he credits a lot of his success to the University’s Careers Service, who were unflinching in their support.

'Coming to Teesside University was a fantastic experience,' said Andrew.

'The course was amazing and surpassed my expectations and the help and support I received from the Careers Service was invaluable.

'There was help and advice about CV’s, cover letters, interview techniques and even how to use social networking to gain employment. Staff were always there for me and gave me the confidence to pursue a career in ICT.'

Work placement During his course Andrew completed a one year work placement at St Patrick’s Catholic College, which reaffirmed his desire to work in an ICT role within a school environment.

Shortly after completing his course, he was contacted by the school who offered him a job which started the day after he graduated, on 24 November.

Andrew added: 'It was because I made such a good impression during my placement year that I was offered the job at St Patrick’s, which is fantastic.

'It was interesting because before they got in touch I was working at a job which I did not really enjoy. Again, the Careers Service at Teesside was fantastic. Even after I left they were there for me, offering advice, guidance and motivation and they really pushed me in the right direction.

'I would encourage all students at Teesside to use the Careers Service – if it wasn’t for the staff there, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.'
