Laura’s first class degree of success at Darlington

26 January 2012

College lecturer Laura Chapman combined work with study to achieve academic success and is graduating at Darlington.

Laura, 27, is among graduates who completed Teesside University accredited courses at the University’s Higher Education Centre at Darlington College.

Originally from Glasgow, Laura moved to Middlesbrough four years ago to start teaching at Askham Bryan College’s Guisborough campus.

Laura, who graduates with a first class BA (Hons) Education Studies, teaches foundation degree students in animal management at Askham Bryan.

'My mum is originally from Middlesbrough and it was through her relatives that I found out about the job opportunity. Having spent many childhood holidays in the area I jumped at the chance,' said Laura, who graduates with a first class degree.

Laura completed a BSc (Hons) in Zoology and an MSc in Wildlife Biology and Conservation while a student in Scotland before moving to Middlesbrough.

She said: 'I wanted to do the degree as part of my own professional development. I completed the course at evening classes, three hours each week. I already had the PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) so was able to study for a year to top up this qualification.

'Studying while working can be difficult, but you have to make it work for you. It was strange being a student and I did chat to my own students about my studies. As I teach degree students it was helpful seeing things from their point of view. The benefits of doing this degree have really made all the hard work worthwhile.'
