Vice-Chancellor appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire

Teesside University Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Henderson CBE has been appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

Lord Crathorne, Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire, formally notified the Vice-Chancellor that he had been appointed, following consultation with Buckingham Palace.

The office of Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant is the representative of the Crown for North Yorkshire and responsible for the organisation of all official Royal visits to the region. North Yorkshire is geographically the largest Lieutenancy in England.

Deputy Lieutenants (DLs) are appointed by the Lord-Lieutenant and remain in office until they retire at 75. They may represent the Lord-Lieutenant at local ceremonies and official events. Professor Graham Henderson CBE is the only Deputy Lieutenant in Guisborough and one of only two in Redcar and Cleveland.

Professor Graham Henderson was awarded the CBE in 2011 for his outstanding services to higher education. He became Vice-Chancellor at Teesside University in 2003 and has overseen rapid growth and development including becoming the first modern University to win the Times Higher Education University of the Year Award and student numbers rising from 12,000 to almost 30,000.

It is very well deserved recognition for the vital role that Graham plays not just in education but in all areas of life both in our region and nationally.'

Professor Henderson added: 'I feel hugely honoured to have been appointed to this prestigious, and historic, office, particularly in this the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year. I am really looking forward to having the opportunity to make a full contribution in my new role.'
