Stephen, 21, of Baglan Heights, Port Talbot, West Glamorgan, said: “I was very pleased to get the prize, it’s helped towards clearing my overdraft!”
He came to the Middlesbrough-based University with an ‘A’ level in 3D studies and a GNVQ in Art & Design; both achieved at Afan College. Stephen said: “From the age of four I’ve always been interested in drawing and design; if I was left on my own with a pencil and pad I’d start drawing away. I chose Teesside because my father’s family were originally from Acklam in Middlesbrough and I knew the area. The Lecturers were encouraging, and helped me to decide on my career choice.”
Stephen particularly enjoyed his final-year project, where he designed a restaurant, which incorporated the latest Internet technology. He said: “People may be able to use WAP mobile phones to order food in restaurants before they turn up, so the meal is ready on arrival. This could be the way of eating out in the future.”
He is now aiming for his first position with a design practice. Stephen is the son of John and Margaret Matthewman and a former pupil of Glanafan Secondary School.
