Special event celebrates mima’s new cafe

An event to celebrate mima’s new café is taking place on Saturday 20 October, from 12.00pm - 4.00pm. Everyone is invited – there will be a special café-themed art trolley and giveaways, face painting, balloons and a free muffin with every drink purchased.

mima’s (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) Saturday art trolley - a creative resource bursting with art materials for all ages - will take on the ‘café’ theme for the day. Join in and get creative in mima’s atrium from 1.00pm - 4.00pm designing your own plate of food, menu or place mat. It is free to join in.

Café mima has recently been taken over by Teesside University. The new cafe has been highly praised by visitors with positive feedback from happy customers. A recent VAQAS (Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme), report praised the café recommending that 'a visit….to enjoy a tasty morsel or two should not be missed.'

Café mima offers a broad range of menu choices, with something for everyone. It serves light lunches and snacks, and delicious home-made cakes. The illy coffee has also made a welcome return, heralded by many as the best coffee around.

It is a very relaxed and family-friendly café with a special kids menu, doodle sheets and crayons to encourage little ones to be creative and keep them entertained, and plenty of high chairs.

Teesside University Secretary & Registrar, Morgan McClintock, said: 'Teesside University is committed to working in partnership with a range of ambitious organisations across Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley to enhance the experience we offer to the area's residents and visitors. We hope families will come along to see the changes we have made to the café and enjoy mima and the activities on offer.'

mima Assistant Director Claire Antrobus said: 'We are working closely with Teesside University to continue to make café mima a great space to eat, drink and spend time. The food is great and the staff extremely friendly, and making visitors to mima feel welcome is hugely important to us.'

Visitors coming along on the day will also have the opportunity to visit mima’s current shows including an acclaimed solo exhibition by artist Julian Stair, with impressive, life-size ceramic vessels and Metadomestic, an exhibition of design and craft.
