Beccy builds on her nursing success

15 November 2012

Beccy Phillips earned national recognition while working towards her degree at Teesside University.

She was named Student Nurse of the Year: Adult at the inaugural Student Nursing Times Awards 2012.

Beccy, 39, from Hartlepool, is graduating from the BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Studies.

It was a change in family circumstances which led Beccy to retrain in nursing and embark on what had always been her ideal career path, having initially worked in other jobs. And while completing her degree she secured employment in elderly care in Hartlepool.

Beccy said: 'I’d been away from education for so long that initially I had to complete an access course before progressing to the degree. My training was fantastic throughout the degree. It was a really positive experience and I would recommend it to anyone who may be considering nursing as a career.

'Now that I’m working, it is an extremely rewarding job and I really cannot imagine doing anything else now.'

Beccy said: 'The degree was an excellent course with outstanding support from lecturers, in particular Kay Scott and Rachel Morris.

'As students we are provided not only with theoretical knowledge, we are also able to practice clinical skills within the skills labs, enabling us to be more equipped both for placements as a student and the work which I’m now doing as a qualified practitioner.'

Commenting on her recognition through the Student Nursing Times accolade, Beccy added: “I was really thrilled to receive the award. Teesside University and North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Trust both played a major part in helping me win and also enabled me to surpass any expectations I ever could have had for myself when embarking on a career as a nurse.

'The trust provided excellent placements, exceptional mentorship and a wide range of learning opportunities. I loved studying at Teesside and feel they prepared me for the range of the opportunities I’ve been given and also how to make the most of them.

'I have made many new friends and I know that I will return to Teesside University for further study to enhance my knowledge and skills as a qualified nurse. I cannot recommend Teesside highly enough to anyone considering nursing.'
