Ben’s inspiration for career in the chemical industry

20 December 2012

Chemistry graduate Ben Tucker took inspiration from his dad when he returned to study while working as a laboratory technician.

Ben, 26, who graduated this year from Teesside University with a first class honours Applied Chemistry degree, said his achievements are in tribute to his dad Dr Andrew Tucker, who sadly died in 2010.

At his graduation, Ben, who works at Huntsman Pigments in Billingham, was named winner of the University’s Teesside Science Award for outstanding academic achievement, which he dedicated to his dad.

He said: 'My dad was a doctor of philosophy, having completed a PhD in environmental decision making. He was a really big influence on me and my decision to pursue a career in the chemical industry. 'When I applied for the role of lab technician at Huntsman, I asked if there would be opportunity for further study to increase my knowledge and understanding of the industry.' He added: 'I was keen to do the applied chemistry degree as it looked challenging and also because I felt it would best complement my job at Huntsman. Teesside University was the sensible choice geographically, with study offered on a day release basis. I was familiar with the University surroundings and aware of the vibrant atmosphere.'

Ben, who lives in Norton, works in Huntsman’s technical services department, where his role involves development and testing of innovative new pigments, analysing customer samples and developing new pigment test methods.

He said: 'The degree enabled me to gain a deeper and wider understanding of the chemistry involved. It has also helped me to develop my written and communication skills, something which I have found to be essential when liaising with colleagues, internal customers and people external to Huntsman.'

Ben added: 'During the degree I had the opportunity to work in two of Huntsman’s factories, one in Greatham near Hartlepool and the other in Huelva, Spain.' Ben said of his time at Teesside University: 'I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the great sense of belonging. I also think a great deal of energy has gone in to modernising and improving the University over recent years which is great for the area.' He added: 'The diversity of modules made the degree course very interesting. For me it was important to improve my knowledge base in chemistry and some modules gave me an appreciation of other science disciplines. It was also a pleasure to be taught by staff who obviously have a genuine passion for the subject.

'I would also like to take this opportunity to say how grateful I am to Huntsman for their sponsorship and support throughout the duration of my degree.'
