Steph shares insight into the business of broadcasting

18 April 2013

BBC Breakfast business reporter and presenter Steph McGovern returned to her home-town to talk to media and journalism students at Teesside University.

Steph, who grew up in Middlesbrough, gave an entertaining and informative talk to students on the BA (Hons) Media Studies, BA(Hons) Multimedia Journalism and BA (Hons) Television and Film Production.

As well as sharing her own experiences of starting out in journalism, Steph also spoke about the variety of stories she has covered across the country in her current role as a broadcast journalist and presenter on television and radio. She also offered advice to the students aiming to embark on a career in the media. She said: 'I come back home quite a lot and it’s always good to see the town thriving and to see how much the University’s campus has developed. It was great to be able to say I’m from that area when Teesside was named University of the Year. 'The facilities are really impressive and it’s been good to be able to speak to students who are so enthusiastic.' Mike Kirkup, Senior Lecturer in Media Studies at the University, said: 'Steph maintains close links with Middlesbrough and by visiting the University she has been able to provide our media and journalism students with an inside view of what it’s like to be a broadcast journalist on national television. 'She spoke to the students about her route into the industry, stories she has covered as a journalist and how she follows up stories in her current role.'
