Free Web Sites - Gift or Con Trick?

05 June 2000

The business potential of 'free' web sites will be explored in a seminar on Thursday 8 June from 8.45am to 11.00am in the Baltic Suite at the Hartlepool Historic Quay. The free seminar is supported by the European Community for small and medium businesses in Hartlepool and surrounding districts.

The seminar will be hosted by the University of Teesside's IT Response Unit, which was set up to promote the use of IT among small/medium sized businesses in the Tees Valley.

Kate Saint of Saint's fashion store in Darlington said: "I have expanded my ladies' fashion and millinery business horizons using electronic communications such as Free bank account checking, pointing out overcharges, and Free utilities audit, guaranteeing lowest tariffs in my area.

"I get this from my membership with a Small and Medium Enterprise club called the National Federation for Business Support (NFBS), which can be found on web at www.nfbs.uk.com. They are offering free websites with low-cost creation as part of their membership package.

"The IT Response Unit at the University is advising me on E-commerce and styles of web-presence I can create. I am now looking forward to getting an NFBS web site to take advantage of the extra market I can reach."

Dr Alan Jones of the IT Response Unit said: "There are opportunities in 'free web site' offers for an astute business to make a profitable trade-off and get good value for what it invests."
