Education programme launched at mima

29 May 2014

In celebration of the new jewellery gallery due to open later this year at mima, children were invited to the gallery during half-term to make jewellery and accessories with craft materials.

mima, in partnership with Teesside University, is currently converting what was previously storage space within mima into a permanent gallery to display its outstanding international collection of contemporary jewellery.

The collection, which comprises over 200 objects, is one of the finest in the UK, and includes work by Ted Noten, Gijs Bakker, Karl Fritsch, Wendy Ramshaw, Otto Künzli and Felieke van der Leest. The gallery will display up to 100 pieces from the collection at any one time.

An extensive series of related education and participative events will take place, with the half-term activities marking the launch of that education programme.

The children used a selection of paper jewellery created during the session to 'jewellery bomb' the nearby Bottle of Notes sculpture.

Among children taking part in the session to make funky jewellery and accessories from 'make do and mend' materials was four-year-old Joseph Machin, from Thornaby.

Joseph's mum Caroline said: 'He loves to come along and play with the colourful craft materials at mima, we come along quite a lot.'
