Criminal justice volunteering event a huge success

12 November 2014

Hundreds of people have expressed an interest in becoming volunteers for the Criminal Justice System thanks to a special event organised by the Police and Crime Commissioner and Teesside University.

The Cleveland Criminal Justice Volunteers Fair, organised by the Teesside University Volunteer Programme Volun-tees, saw more than 1,000 local people and students take the opportunity to speak to over 15 organisations from within the Criminal Justice System. These included Lifeline, Eva Women’s Aid, Cleveland Police Special Constabulary and Victim Support. The six-hour event concluded with expressions of interest received for various roles including support at court for victims of crime and their families, to restorative justice facilitators.

Barry Coppinger, Police and Crime Commissioner for Cleveland said: 'The success of the Criminal Justice Volunteering Event highlights the importance and special role volunteers have in the Criminal Justice System.

'I am delighted that we have once again got a fantastic number of individuals expressing interest in the various roles that were advertised. The enthusiasm shown by those in attendance is a credit to the people of Cleveland.

'I would like to thank Teesside University for hosting the event and say a special thank you to all organisations that came together to make the day a success.'

Dr Ian Pepper, Principal Lecturer in Policing in Teesside University’s School of Social Sciences, Business & Law, said: 'This event has followed on from a very successful first year which has seen a great number of students become involved in supporting the Criminal Justice System. At Teesside University we embrace employability and these kinds of events provide great opportunities.

'Volunteering provides enormous benefits to students. It develops their experience and social skills and allows them to work on projects they have a genuine interest in.

'We are absolutely delighted with the number of people who have come along to this year’s Criminal Justice System Volunteering Fair. The turnout was incredible and everybody seemed enthused and excited by the opportunities that were available.'
