Update from the University of Teesside

31 January 2000

We are pleased to inform you that the engineering student admitted to South Cleveland Hospital on Monday 24 January with meningococcal septicaemia has now been discharged after making very good recovery. He has been visited by appropriate representatives from his School, Student Services, the Students’ Union and Public Relations who are helping him cope with his return to campus.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind students and staff of the need to be aware of the signs and symptoms of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia. Information leaflets are available at the reception areas in the Learning Resource Centre, the Main Reception, Student Centre and the Students’ Union.

Anyone requiring further information may contact the Student Health Adviser, Jean Hall, in the Student Centre (former library building), tel. Ext. 3202. Any media inquiries should be directed to the University’s Press and Public Relations Office, tel 01642 342015.

We would like to reassure everyone that they are at no more risk of acquiring the illness from their colleagues (or fellow students) on campus than they are from the general public.
