Social enterprise to help young people in Ghana become Media Savvy

08 May 2015

An innovative social enterprise is to give assistance to young people in Ghana thanks to help from Teesside University.

Media Savvy Training Solutions CIC has been given a grant of £15,800 from the UnLtd SEE Change programme to deliver media production classes in the West African country.

The social enterprise, which originated from the David Puttnam Media Centre at Sunderland University, was founded by Dan Makaveli and works with vulnerable and disadvantaged people to promote education, employability and creativity by using digital arts and media.

Media Savvy use high-end production equipment and facilities to deliver accredited and non-accredited training to hard-to-reach and marginalised groups such as offenders, people with mental health problems, single parents and black and minority ethnic (BME) groups.

The UnLtd SEE Change programme is a charity fund for social entrepreneurs which is administered by Teesside University.

The grant will enable Media Savvy to expand internationally and ultimately deliver a range of courses in Ghana. Dan will also receive specialist social enterprise mentoring and support.

The paid-for courses in Ghana will also provide a new revenue stream for Media Savvy which will be used to improve the current offering in the UK and finance important local work.

Dan said: 'We specialise in using a personalised learning approach so all of our courses are tailored to the specific needs of the groups which we’re delivering to.

'The customised courses enable a ‘learning by stealth’ approach. By designing fun projects, we can help our groups improve their core skills and technology and software skills.

'We now aim to deliver a pilot project in Ghana which will have direct benefits for our work here.'

The UnLtd SEE Change programmes aims to support existing social entrepreneurs that require access to funding to grow their business on a national or international scale.

Laura Woods, Director of Academic Enterprise at Teesside University, said: “Dan does fantastic work helping under-privileged and under-represented groups gain new skills and confidence using the latest digital media.

“We are delighted to be able to support his work and help him grow his innovative social enterprise.”
