Students' Union commended for green efforts

09 July 2015

Teesside University Students’ Union (TUSU) has secured gold for the fourth year running in a prestigious national initiative which recognises the efforts of an organisation to operate in an environmentally sustainable way.

Green Impact is run by The National Union Of Students (NUS) with participating Students’ Unions assessed across a range of criteria including their commitment to recycling and energy efficiency.

It also looks at campaigning and lobbying work carried out by the Students’ Union to develop a greener, more environmentally sound campus and raise student awareness of the need to consider the environment in their day to day lives.

The gold award caps another successful year for the Students’ Union which, earlier this year, also secured gold in the national Best Bar None Awards. This initiative recognises excellent standards of staff training, responsible practices when serving alcohol and a commitment to the very best customer service in licensed premises run by the organisation.

Manon Goetschel Vice-President (Welfare) at the Students’ Union, who led on the work to secure gold in Green Impact, said: 'We see it as one of our key responsibilities to run an environmentally sustainable organisation and encourage students to think and act greener too. We’d be doing those things even if there wasn’t an initiative like this but obviously it’s very nice to receive gold recognition again this year for the work we’ve done. It inspires the whole team to get even more environmentally friendly in the year ahead.'
