New accommodation welcomes first students

17 September 2015

Thousands of new and returning students are set to kick-start the academic year during Freshers’ Fortnight and many have already started moving into Teesside University’s brand new accommodation.

Central Halls, on Borough Road, will consist of 75, four to eight bedroom apartments, all with individual, en-suite bedrooms.

Work on the first phase of the development is complete, with new students moving in this week.

There’s plenty for students to get excited about with the new Campus Heart development and The Curve building also finished, along with the £6m upgrade to the science and engineering facilities in both the Orion and Stephenson buildings. And there will be a whole host of events taking place during Freshers’, including an appearance by Radio One’s Greg James.

The redevelopment of Central Halls, the former Teesside Central building, is part of the University’s commitment to providing the best possible student experience, with over a quarter of a billion pounds invested in its campus in recent years.

Malcolm Page, Chief Operating Officer at Teesside University, said: 'Central Halls is a fantastic addition to our student housing portfolio. We know that accommodation is at the forefront of students’ minds when thinking about university and I am sure that Central Halls will act as a huge incentive to the thousands of students who choose to come to live and study in Middlesbrough each year.'

Work on Central Halls has been carried out by Willmott Dixon. 187 individual rooms are available to students this year, with a further 199 ready for students in 2016.

Freshers’ Fortnight at Teesside University runs from 19 September to 3 October.
