Strengthening research opportunities

Dozens of funded study opportunities are available for PhD students interested in the arts and humanities with Teesside University involved in two prestigious consortiums.

The University is part of the North of England Consortium for Arts and Humanities (NECAH), along with the Universities of Hull, Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett and Sheffield Hallam.

The Consortium is offering 12 fully-funded PhD studentships for 2016 covering research areas ranging from archaeology and history to drama and literature. They include payment of fees and an annual stipend (currently £14,057) for three years of full-time study.

Co-ordinated through the Department of History at the University of Hull, NECAH aims to establish the six institutions as beacons of arts and humanities research in the north, offering innovative training and cross-institutional research supervision. Each member brings strengths in one or more key fields of research expertise and doctoral training.

Teesside’s contributing areas are History, English and Visual Culture.

The University is also part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Heritage Consortium, along with Bradford, Hull, Huddersfield, Leeds Beckett, Northumbria and Sheffield Hallam.

The Consortium is offering a further 12 PhD studentships, beginning in October next year and covering subject areas including, archaeology, cultural history, popular culture and heritage management.

Dr Natasha Vall, Reader in Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media and Acting Director of the Institute of Design, Culture and the Arts, said: 'These studentships will helpall the universities involved to attract the researchers of the future in the arts and humanities sector. They are fantastic projects to be involved with and we are delighted to be able to use our expertise to support further research opportunities in this way.'
