Dr Sentamu is spending one week in each of the 21 Deaneries for his pilgrimage of prayer, witness and blessing.

The pilgrimage started on 1 December to mark the beginning of Advent and will carry on until 22 May.

During his time in Middlesbrough, Dr Sentamu visited churches and schools, as well as a foodbank and Teesside Hospice. He spent time talking to many different people, encouraging them to find faith.

This is Dr Sentamu’s first pilgrimage for 10 years when he carried out a pilgrimage around Birmingham when he was Bishop of Birmingham.

Dr Sentamu, who received a Doctor of Laws from Teesside University in 2009, was impressed by the University’s new campus and its commitment to helping young people achieve success.

He said: 'The campus looks lovely and the University is really benefiting the community. The pilgrimage is wonderful – I have seen some amazing things and met with great people.'
