Shahda Khan MBE won the Services to Civil/Third Sector at the fourth annual British Muslim Awards.

The awards recognise the achievements of British Muslims at the forefront of their industries and also raises money for its charity partner, the National Zakat Foundation.

Shahda graduated from Teesside University and is on the Board of Governors. She works as the Principal Partnerships and Cohesion Officer for Middlesbrough Council, working to ensure resilient and cohesive communities. Her role includes coordinating the Middlesbrough Interfaith Network, awareness raising of issues such as mental health, child sexual exploitation and trafficking, as well as developing strategies on related matters.

Shahda is also voluntarily involved with a variety of regional and national forums and organisations, including those tackling domestic and sexual violence and extremism, as well initiatives which have helped to build bridges between diverse communities.

Commenting on her recognition at the British Muslim Awards, Shahda said: 'Being nominated for this award, never mind winning, was an absolute shock and a humbling experience.

'I’m just a small part of a large group of people who want to make life better for all our communities. I really couldn’t do it without everyone’s support, especially all those who volunteer their time and energy whenever I ask.'
