Teesside University pledges rise in living wage for all staff

Teesside University has announced it will again pay the increase in the UK’s voluntary living wage – adding 40p per hour on to earnings for staff on the lowest salary point.

Promoted by the Living Wage Foundation, the voluntary living wage outside of London is now recommended to be £8.25 per hour, rising from £7.85 and Teesside University will implement this on 1 March.

The University is renowned in the region as an organisation that values its workforce and it is one of only five UK universities to be accredited with the Investors in People Gold Award – the highest Investors in People accolade.

Middlesbrough MP Andy McDonald last year mounted a campaign to make Middlesbrough a living wage town and the University is delighted to support this and continue to improve its offer.

Malcolm Page, Chief Operating Officer, said: 'Teesside University offers one of the best learning experiences for students in the country. We could not sustain this if it were not for the dedicated staff who work here. Every member of staff plays a vital part in making the institution the success it is.

'We value the work of all of our staff enormously and the living wage level is important for living standards, particularly in the context of the continued pressure on the cost of living.'

Around 2,000 businesses across the UK covering 70,000 workers are signed up to the scheme. Teesside University employs more than 2,300 staff, 183 of which will benefit from the increase.
