Computer games come alive on Teesside

20 February 2001

Computer games enthusiasts can explore their interest and enter competitions at the University of Teesside thanks to the annual computer games weekend entitled, ‘BCS Computer LAN Party‘. The event will take place at the University on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 March in conjunction with the British Computer Society. The event begins at the Europa Building, Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough at 11am each day and finishes at 4pm. Entry is free and all are welcome to attend.

Event organiser Alan Jones said: "Last year we attracted over 60 young gamers aged 16-26, though a few younger people showed keen interest. There will be two main competitions this year, one for teams and one for individuals.

“The team contest features Half Life Counter Strike, a game which promotes teamwork and strategic organisation. The individual competition will involve the game, Quake3.”

Companies including Havas-Interactive and Activision will be donating software to be used during the games weekend. Prizes will also be donated by VIGLEN and Activision including game CDs and Gamepads.

The University's new Computer Games lab (of 20 high-spec PCs) will be the main venue. Support and break-sessions will come from surfing on Internet-capable PCs, soft drinks and, it is hoped, some action on a Dreamcast console.

To register to play in the competitions, please visit www-cira.tees.ac.uk/dragon or call Alan Jones on 01642 342681.
