The BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences graduate took the extended route and completed a foundation year before the degree, studying over four years.
Jess, 22, from Stockton, said: “I decided to study at Teesside as I'd heard the biological sciences course was varied in subjects such as cell biology and microbiology, bioprocessing and genetics and molecular biology.”
Her current role as a cell production technologist with biopharmaceutical manufacturing company Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, based in Billingham.
“The degree at Teesside definitely prepared me with the knowledge and skills I need in my career. The course was ideal for me, as I initially didn't know which direction to take and the modules enabled me to look into a few different areas of biology.
“It wasn't until I'd completed the foundation year and first year of the degree that I realised my passion was in microbiology.
“My experience at Teesside University has been the best four years of my life. I've become more confident, made life-long friends and developed myself both personally and professionally.
“I knew that Teesside University had a Student's Union which ran many social clubs, as well as the fact that part of the campus is on Southfield Road which has a few pubs nearby offering student discounts.
'I was also impressed that various courses were recognised by academic societies, such as my course which is recognised by The Royal Society of Biology, which increases their validity in the professional world.
'The lecturers were fantastic, they put me forward for honours and awards such as the Oxford University Press Biosciences Award, which I won in first year and I was chosen give the valedictory address at graduation. Without them I wouldn't be where I am today.'
Jess added: 'My advice for anyone thinking of studying at Teesside University is to work hard, ask for help if you’re unsure, get involved in social activities, take full advantage of the career services and try your hardest.'
