Graduate sees graphic designs realised in promotional campaign

A graphic design degree led to one student seeing her work being used in a major promotional campaign for Teesside University.

Megan Howard, from Catterick, North Yorkshire, won a competition to design the new logo for the University’s Student Futures programme.

The BA (Hons) Graphic Design graduate created a logo design which incorporated the theme of being ‘future ready’ to highlight how students are prepared for employment while they study and beyond graduation.

As well as seeing her work displayed on promotional material across the University, Megan spent time with the University’s in-house creative team to see how her designs were taken forward.

Megan said: 'It was brilliant to see my work recognised in this way by the University and to have an opportunity to see how professional designers carry out their work. It was also a boost for my CV.'

Megan always knew she wanted to be a graphic designer from a young age. Before starting her degree she initially planned to study at another university, but changed her mind after visiting Teesside.

She said: 'When I visited Teesside and spoke to staff and students, it completely changed my mind about where I wanted to study. It was great to speak to others and it was really important that I had the opportunity to ask questions.'

As part of the course, Megan had the opportunity to travel to New York and Berlin for design inspiration, but the real stand-out moments will be the people she met along the way.

'The friends I have made will be the things I remember most about my time at university. I also really value how well the lecturers get to know you. I received a lot of support from staff and they encouraged me to take on a range of projects,' she said.

Megan is currently working as a freelance graphic designer, a job she will be able to take with her when she travels to Thailand with her boyfriend Tom later this year.

She added: 'Our first stop is Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, then we plan to travel around the country. The skills I have learned mean that I can work anywhere in the world, as long as there is a good internet connection. My course has really set me up for the future and I feel prepared professionally.'
