Hundreds of school and college students have so far benefited from the bespoke STEMulate12 and DESIGN sTUdio12 sessions provided by the University’s School of Science, Engineering & Design.

The curriculum-enhancing enrichment days are offered to year 12 students studying science, technology, engineering, maths and design subjects. Whilst at the University they participate in two sessions in a laboratory or workshop setting gaining practical, hands-on experience using the University’s state-of-the-art facilities.

There is also career guidance throughout the day from academic staff, employers and current students or graduates to help inform students about their future progression paths and career choices.

There is a choice of 19 workshops in total in subject areas including biomedical science, crime scene and forensic investigation, chemical engineering, mechanical and aerospace engineering, food science and nutrition, and fashion, graphic, interior and product design.

STEMulate12 and DESIGN sTUdio12 are proving popular among regional school and college students as well as those from further afield and there will be sessions taking place from March all the way through until July.

Christine Gemmel- Ferguson from Darlington College, said the events were invaluable to their students.

'They gave a real taste of university life, along with fun, informative workshops that are relevant to their current study. Our students particularly enjoyed the flight simulator, smoothie making and learning about renewable energy.'

These bespoke events are proving to be extremely popular and provide a fantastic opportunity for school and college students to get a real taste for what a university education can provide.

Our students praised the friendly and welcoming staff who provided a first-class experience, as well as the excellent lecturers who delivered the sessions with passion and enthusiasm.'

Once students have completed STEMulate12 or DESIGN sTUdio12, they also receive a participation certificate worth 20 tariff points which can be used towards meeting entry requirements for a relevant Teesside University degree in the School of Science, Engineering & Design.

Dimitrios Nicolaou, Associate Dean in Teesside University’s School of Science, Engineering & Design, said: 'These bespoke events are proving to be extremely popular and provide a fantastic opportunity for school and college students to get a real taste for what a university education can provide. 'Everybody who attends shows an incredible level of commitment and engagement and they leave with a great deal of knowledge and enthusiasm about subject areas they are already passionate about.'

The next STEMulate12 and DESIGN sTUdio12 take place on 27 March. For further details or to find out about future sessions, contact SDS12@tees.ac.uk.
