Celebrating innovation in computing and digital technologies

01 May 2019

Talented students will showcase their work at Teesside University’s annual ExpoTees exhibition of computer innovation, technology and the arts.

Final year students from the School of Computing & Digital Technologies will link up with industry professionals at ExpoTees 2019, which this year takes place at the University’s Middlesbrough campus on Wednesday 15 May and Thursday 16 May.

ExpoTees provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their work to guests from industry, education and business, showcasing their final year projects and portfolios as they prepare to graduate and join the workforce.

Since its launch, ExpoTees has helped hundreds of graduates secure employment as a direct result of the showcase event and interactive exhibition.

Graduates have gone on to work at some of the biggest names in film, computer games and computer science, including Amplience, CBeebies, Ubisoft Reflections and Framestore.

ExpoTees has evolved from a small exhibition of work by a handful of students to a two-day event featuring up to 200 students exhibiting cutting edge digital work to hundreds of guests and industry experts.

Steven Mead, ExpoTees event director and Senior Lecturer in Computing, said: 'ExpoTees has continued to grow each year and the students’ work continues to excel and diversify with the range of courses now available in the University’s School of Computing & Digital Technologies.

'It is a great event for students to showcase their work, while also providing them with an opportunity to get exposure to industry representatives and receive feedback from experts in the field.

'It not only provides our students with a chance to show off their work as they prepare to join the workforce, but it also provides an opportunity for employers to meet talented students who are potential new recruits for their organisations.'

Each day of ExpoTees has a specific focus. Wednesday 15 May centres on animation, visual effects, games and comics, while Thursday 16 May highlights computer science, digital media, journalism and the arts.

ExpoTees: Animation, visual effects, games, concept art, comics and television and film on Wednesday 15 May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm, IT Building, showcases work demonstrating creativity, imagination and industry-standard skills from our Skillset accredited courses. This highly interactive exhibition enables visitors to play games produced by students, while the annual ExpoTees cinema will show some of short films created by students.

ExpoTees: Computer science, digital media, journalism and the arts on Thursday 16 May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm, IT Building, will highlight innovative work in advanced computer technology, design and development, digital media, web, fine art, journalism and film production. Student work can be seen alongside interactive and experimental exhibits using robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality and a showreel of exemplary media and film production work.

Now in its 20th year, Animex, held from Monday 13 May to Friday 17 May, brings a star line-up of some of the world’s biggest names in animation and computer games to Teesside, enabling students to rub shoulders with industry experts who will be speaking about their latest projects and share insight into how they have made their mark in animation, games and visual effects.

Also taking place this summer is ExpoTees London, to be hosted in June at creative studio Framestore, when recruiters can meet talented Teesside University graduates and talk about their work.
