Scholarship success for mechanical engineering student

11 November 2020

A mechanical engineer who is earning while learning at Teesside University has won an esteemed scholarship to help fund his studies.

Nathan Cochrane, who is currently completing the MSc (Hons) Mechanical Engineering part-time, has been awarded The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Postgraduate Scholarship Award.

IMechE offer a range of scholarships to help invest in the future of developing engineers, including postgraduate scholarships which are awarded to exceptional graduates to help fund their master’s degree.

The award which will help to fund Nathan’s studies, is particularly welcome as he prepares to become a dad.

Nathan, 30, who works as an Applications Engineer for Aavid, Thermal Division of Boyd Corporation, based in Ashington, Northumberland, said: 'My wife is expecting our first baby in March 2021. So, as you can imagine, saving money to fund myself was proving very difficult as prams, baby clothes and furniture take precedence.

'My choice to embark upon postgraduate master’s study was self-motivated, so funding support was not readily available. The scholarship from IMechE guaranteed my study on the course, for which I am extremely grateful.'

He added: 'Achieving a master’s degree will make me eligible to apply for chartership with the IMechE, which has been a longstanding professional and personal goal of mine.

'I became aware of the IMechE scholarship through Teesside University’s online prospectus, as the course overview suggested that study may result in eligibility for the scholarship. The link provided led me to the IMechE scholarships and awards page, which details the support they offer for engineers at any level of their career.'

Teesside University came heavily recommended to me by a colleague who is here currently studying here. The MSc course modules are extremely practical and relevant for my field

Nathan had to complete a rigorous application process, which included a panel interview. Usually held at the IMechE headquarters in London, this year the interview was held online due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Nathan said: 'Around two weeks following the interview, I received a letter with the brilliant news that I had won the award. I think the award also serves as an official recognition of my professional engineering dedication, which significantly increases my future employability.'

He added: 'Teesside University came heavily recommended to me by a colleague who is currently studying here. The MSc course modules are extremely practical and relevant for my field.

'The course is IMechE accredited, which is critical for my chartership eligibility. But equally as important, this accreditation gave me assurance that the course is delivered to an international standard. The well organised and engaging virtual open day finalised my decision to study with Teesside.'

Nathan added: 'I'm passionate to raise awareness about the support available from IMechE for the development of young engineers. I would encourage all undergraduate and postgraduate students to explore the scholarships available and get involved.'
