Top marks for Teesside's Computing courses

30 May 2001

The University of Teesside's School of Computing & Mathematics is celebrating another positive review of its courses. The School is the only Computing faculty in a new university to have gained an 'Excellent' rating for its teaching from the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

Now, the British Computer Society (BCS) - the professional body for the industry - has given a ringing endorsement to the work of the School in its report into the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered at Teesside.

The BCS Accreditation & Exemption Report follows a two-day visit to the University and the panel of experts say they were "impressed with the organisational strengths of the School and the positive approach to course delivery, innovation and student support."

Dr Pete Prince, Acting Director of the School, said: "Clearly, we are delighted that the British Computer Society has given Teesside a clean bill of health. It is a wonderful outcome and the result of the team spirit here; and I would like to congratulate all the academic, administrative and technical staff in the School."

The BCS conduct their visits about every four years and this is the sixth time they have been to Teesside. Over two days they met teaching, research and non-academic staff and saw the new computer laboratories in the new Europa Building, part of a £4m development which includes the Centre for Enterprise on the ground floor.

The Society's Report means that all of the School's Bachelor of Science (BSc) honours degrees have either full or partial exemption form BCS exams and that the Master of Science (MSc) courses and Higher National Diploma HND courses carry partial exemption. A number of BSc honours courses also carry partial Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
