UN expert explores the local and national drugs problem

31 May 2001

The topical area of drugs will be explored in a one-day workshop at the University of Teesside on Tuesday 19 June 2001 from 10am-4pm.

Hosted by the University's Centre for Police Research and Education (CPRE), the workshop is entitled 'Drugs: Global and Local Perspectives'. It will be jointly presented by Dr Ian Oliver, former Chief constable of Grampian Police, and now an independent consultant for the United Nations Drugs Control Programme, and Mark Simpson, a Senior Criminology Lecturer of the University of Teesside.

The workshop will focus on cutting-edge research and developments within the drug field. Topics to be discussed include:

globalization and its impact on illicit drug taking within the UK
the legalization debate
changing patterns of drug use within the UK
the drugs and crime relationship.

Mark Simpson said: "The event will be an ideal opportunity to network, share good practice and exchange information. The day will be of particular interest to those working in any field of education, police officers, criminologists and all those involved in policy making in this area."

The cost (including buffet lunch) is £28 per delegate. For more details contact Judy Flynn, CPRE Secretary on 01642 342333, fax 01642 342399, e-mail j.flynn@tees.ac.uk
