The End of Season Sports Awards were held at the Riverside Stadium on the evening of Wednesday 29 March.

University coaches and staff also joined the students to celebrate their sporting achievements.

A number of awards were presented throughout the evening, including Coach of the Year, which went to Women’s Football Coach Claire Streeter and Sports Leader of the Year, which was awarded to Grace Armitage (Cheerleading).

The Women’s Football Team, which scooped the league and cup double this year, took home Team of the Year, as well as Team Performance of the Year. In addition, team member and current Beth Mead Scholar, Erin Boyle, took home Individual Performance of the Year for her consistency, influence, development and fantastic attitude during the season.

In the individual categories, Liam Doody was named Male Sports Person of the Year, and Amy Bone won Female Sports Person of the Year for her two gold medals at two BUCS Taekwondo Championships.

The Cheerleading Club also took the award for Club of the Year. And Sports Achievements Awards were handed to Jess Brian and Lewis Westwood to recognise their success in achieving a team gold medal with the GB Tumbling Team.

Team successes were also highlighted, including the Men’s Badminton Team who went undefeated all season and were crowned BUCS league champions 2023.

Head of Sport at Teesside University, Will Jones said: “It was a fantastic evening and a great opportunity to reflect on and recognise so many great sporting successes by students at Teesside University.

“The University also continues to run the FA’s Emerging Talent Club programme for aspiring female footballers from ages 11-16, as well as using its sporting expertise and facilities to support a range of emerging talent in a range of sports through the Amp Champs programme.”

It has been a great year for sport at Teesside University, with the first students starting on both the Beth Mead Scholarship and George Friend Scholarship, as well as the launch of the University’s Football Academy. Football superstar and Teesside graduate Beth Mead also crowned a remarkable year by winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in December.
