The University has signed a memorandum of understanding with Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in India to collaborate in several ways, including joint research bids. The MoU will initially focus upon industrial robotics and control, digitalisation and automation, and smart energy applications.

Links have already been established through work by Professor Michael Short, head of Teesside University’s Centre for Sustainable Engineering, and Professor Arockia Selvakumar Arockia Doss, of Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, in co-authoring research papers and involvement in organising international conferences. The partnership will further enable both institutions to collaborate through student exchange and research opportunities, to share knowledge in relation to planning academic programmes and courses, and through the creation of centres of excellence in relation to science and technology.

Professor Short said: “It has been a pleasure to recently host Professor Arockia and we are delighted to establish this partnership.

“With the recent announcement of a wider science and technology agreement between the UK and India, which has many relevant themes such as AI/digital technology, bioinformatics and net zero at its forefront, we are looking forward to a fruitful collaboration between our institutions moving forwards.”

Professor Arockia said: “We see an amazing scope for research collaboration between both the universities in areas of intelligent control and automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, healthcare, Industry 4.0 and sustainable engineering. We look forward to fruitful initiatives and collaborations between Teesside University and Vellore Institute of Technology.”

Further building on Teesside University’s international partnerships and global reputation, Professor Short was recently named among the most influential people in the UK working within the Net Zero agenda.

The inaugural Net Zero 50 List 2022, which highlights inspiring individuals, initiatives, products and services driving forward decarbonisation, recognised Professor Short in the Net Zero Hero category for his work leading the University’s Centre for Sustainable Engineering which focuses on design, development and enhancement of engineering systems, processes and products that are efficient and sustainable, without compromising the natural environment.
