Oluwaseun, 26, of Middlesbrough, who is studying for a masters in film and television production in the University’s School of Arts & Creative Industries, was recognised at the pageant, founded last year by Taste of Africa North East to provide a platform for black women to express themselves.

Miss Black History North East aims to encourage young black women to break down beauty stereotypes and embrace their culture, talent and creativity.

Oluwaseun will now be involved in events as an ambassador for Taste of Africa North East, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.

Along with her studies, Oluwaseun is also a professional make-up artist, media executive and digital creator. She said: “Winning the Miss Black History pageant is not just a crown on my head; it’s a celebration of strength, beauty and resilience, and our heritage.

“During my reign as queen, I intend to introduce some educational initiatives on different academic levels such as workshops to highlight contributions of black individuals to history, culture and society.

“I also intend to encourage more cultural celebrations, host cultural festivals, art exhibitions and performances that showcase the rich heritage and diversity of black communities in the North-east region and the world at large. Additionally, I want to develop outreach programmes to support and uplift the black community, including mentorship programmes for black youths, job fairs and initiatives to address social issues like inequality and injustice.

"Another goal I have is to tell African stories worldwide and I’m excited to have a creative team to work with.”

Oluwaseun received her title at a special ceremony held in Middlesbrough.

Vaina Lumbiwa, from Taste of Africa North East, said: “It was a brilliant way to kick off Black History Month, by the crowning of our new queen.

“The night was nothing short of amazing and we celebrate our young women that personify our theme, More than the Face.”
