The Hartlepool-born WBA, IBF and WBO super-middleweight champion will share insights from her remarkable life and career during the next instalment of Teesside University’s ‘In Conversation’ series.
After initially taking up the sport aged 12 at the local Hartlepool Headland Boys Club, Marshall is credited with being among those who have helped put women’s boxing on the map.
As an amateur, Marshall represented Great Britain at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics and took Gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. In 2017, she turned professional and was signed up by boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Junior, subsequently making her debut in Nevada, USA.
She has since held world championships in two weight classes, including the WBO middleweight title from 2020-22, and the undisputed and Ring magazine female super-middleweight title since July 2023.
More than two million viewers tuned in to see Marshall’s fight against America’s Claressa Shields in October 2022, making it the most-watched women’s professional boxing event in history. It was also the first time London’s O2 Arena was a 20,000 sell-out for an all-women card.
Although she has enjoyed global triumph in the world of boxing, Marshall has successfully balanced her sporting achievements with her education, graduating from Teesside University with BSc (Hons) Applied Sports Science in 2021.
Savannah has certainly made her mark in the world of boxing and she has a fantastic story to share. I am sure this will prove to be a memorable night for those who attend.
On Thursday 25 January 2024, Marshall will return to the University to deliver an exclusive ‘In Conversation’ talk at Teesside University Students’ Union. The event is open to all, with tickets costing £5 for the public and £4 for Teesside University students.
The ‘In Conversation’ series has previously welcomed notable speakers from the worlds of sport, culture, and business, including rugby legend Rory Underwood MBE DL, media mogul Dominic Carter, and best-selling author Adele Parks MBE.
Rachael Barker, Head of Alumni Engagement and Stakeholder Development at Teesside University, said: “Savannah is known for her determination and aggressive fighting style, but she’s also an incredible ambassador for us here at Teesside University. We are delighted to continue our In Conversation series with her in 2024.
As part of the ‘In Conversation’ series, Aston Martin’s design chief Marek Reichman will host an audience at Teesside University’s new London campus on Monday 4 December. Then on Tuesday 5 March 2024, former Ferrari F1 Race Engineer Rob Smedley, will be guest speaker at Teesside University Students’ Union back in Middlesbrough.
