As part of Project Curiosity, teaching staff from further education colleges in the North East of England have visited Teesside University to receive Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training at the University’s state-of-the-art facilities in Middlesbrough.

As a key contributor to Education Partnership North East’s expert teacher programme, University staff have delivered on-site training, showcasing specialist teaching techniques to support the development of healthcare professionals of the future.

Education Partnership North East comprises Hartlepool, Sunderland and Northumberland Colleges.

As part of its mission to support the region’s healthcare needs, Teesside University recently opened BIOS, a £36.9m building which boasts four floors of cutting-edge facilities for the science and clinical subjects, to transform the way health provision is delivered though digital and immersive learning.

Ruth Mitchell, Associate Dean (Enterprise and Knowledge Exchange) in the School of Health & Life Sciences, said: “It was fantastic to welcome our colleagues from Education Partnership North East to Teesside University.

“Project Curiosity is a professional development programme for the health and science teaching teams across the three colleges.

We are extremely excited to be working in partnership with Teesside University around ...how we can collectively bring together further and higher education staff to inspire curiosity around new ways of thinking about pedagogy and professional development.

Toni Rhodes, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Education Partnership North East

“The programme aims to explore contemporary developments in health and science with a focus on developing skills in pedagogical approaches to inspire staff in the delivery of their teaching.”

The interactive sessions, many of which were delivered within BIOS, included a range of topics including mixed reality principles, the interactive ward and teaching creatively in the field of wound care and anatomy.

So far, two sessions, delivered to almost 60 teaching staff, have been held at Teesside University while a further session has been delivered to 20 staff at Sunderland College. It is hoped more sessions can be delivered in the future.

Toni Rhodes, Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Education Partnership North East, said: "We are extremely excited to be working in partnership with Teesside University around pedagogical development and how we can collectively bring together further and higher education staff to inspire curiosity around new ways of thinking about pedagogy and professional development."
