The theme for this year’s IWD, on Friday 8 March, is Inspire Inclusion, with Teesside University events planned to celebrate the achievement of women, raise awareness about discrimination, and take action to drive gender equality.

Helen Cutting, Executive Director of Legal and Governance Services & University Secretary, and Executive Champion for Gender Equality, said: “As a University we have such a diverse campus community, and we want to ensure that the wide range of attributes, skills, views and experiences that we all have, are brought forward.

“Recognising the important contribution each individual can make also helps us to ensure a sense of belonging. International Women’s Day provides a great opportunity for staff to join in our work to support gender equality.”

Events which members of the public are welcome to attend include:

Discover the massive impact women have had on science in the UK in our Women into STEM event on Wednesday 6 March. Hear from inspirational women about their careers and the challenges they faced, while exploring the range of careers available in the sector. Take part in a practical, hands-on session to solve a science-based problem.

Recognising the important contribution each individual can make also helps us to ensure a sense of belonging.

Teesside alumna Jenna Warren, author of The Moon and Stars, will be talking about her work as a writer and founder of an independent bookstore in Saltburn in the first of the University’s Beyond the Book talks on Thursday 7 March in the Library.

MIMA will host GirlBoss: The Sound of International Women's Day, which promises to be a day of inspirational sounds, music-making, and conversation on Saturday 9 March.

Teesside University is a passionate supporter of IWD and celebrates the women who help make our region such an outstanding place to live, work and study. There are a range of IWD events taking place during the week for staff and students, including a talk to offer insight into period poverty, a session on tackling the stigma around menopause, and a celebration of gender equality work relating to Athena Swan.

Colleagues from across the University are also encouraged to get involved in work to support gender equality by joining the staff Gender Focus Group and support the activities and ideas that the group leads on.
