Discovering the science behind a glass of beer, understanding the threat of pink bacteria, and learning about Teesside’s climate industry are among the amazing topics being discovered over a Pint of Science.

Pint of Science is a popular international science festival dedicated to making research more accessible by taking academics out of their laboratories and classrooms to engage with the public in pubs and cafes to share their knowledge and expertise.

The annual event involves academics presenting their research in new and engaging ways, in informal settings across the country.

The Teesside Pint of Science events in Middlesbrough are being organised by Dr Helen Tidy,Dr Rhys Williams and Dr Dominic Gilchrist from the University’s School of Health & Life Sciences. They will take place between Monday 13 May to Wednesday 15 May, at Off the Ground Coffee, Grange Road, Middlesbrough.

Pint of Science Darlington, organised by Teesside University’s National Horizons Centre, will also take place between Monday 13 May to Wednesday 15 May for the first time

The following academics will be speaking at the Middlesbrough event: Dr Jibin He (Head of Science), Nick Smith (Head Brewer of Steam Machine Brewing Company), Dr Dominic Gilchrist (Lecturer in Microbiology), Dr Bruno Lopes, (Lecturer in Microbiology) Dr Clair Cooper (Just Transition Project - Teesside University) and Dr Alessandro Giampieri (Postdoctoral Research Associate - Durham University).

Pint of Science is a celebration of the role science plays in our lives. It allows some of the greatest researchers to share their knowledge in an environment where everyone feels welcome and comfortable to learn.

Brewing Up Some Science is the first event taking place on Monday 13 May. It looks at the amazing science that goes into making a glass of frothy beer.

The second talk titled Marvelous Microbes, talks about the threat of pink bacteria and discoveries learned by blasting microbes into outer space. This event will take place on Tuesday 14 May.

On Wednesday 15 May, Net Zero to Hero will dive into how managing climate change is critical to the future of mankind and how Tees Valley is pioneering the way.

Dr Helen Tidy, Associate Professor of Learning & Teaching in the School of Health & Life Sciences, said:

‘Pint of Science is a celebration of the role science plays in our lives. It allows some of the greatest researchers to share their knowledge in an environment where everyone feels welcome and comfortable to learn.’
