Gogglebox favourite shares expertise at Teesside University

Television personality and educator Baasit Siddiqui joined teachers and careers advisers from across the region for an event aimed at improving progression and career opportunities for young people.

Teesside University’s annual Supporting Progression Conference invites careers teams to come together to share best practice on improving employability outcomes for young people and retaining talent in the region.

In his keynote, Gogglebox star and educational consultant Baasit Siddiqui introduced his seven steps to thrive in education and explored how educators can best support their school and college community while celebrating the impact they make.

He said: 'I could not have been made to feel more welcome by the staff at Teesside University and the delegates at the Supporting Progression Conference.

'It was a pleasure to speak to and learn from passionate educators and knowledgeable speakers.

'My Let’s Thrive session focused on strategies I use to engage young people and gave me the opportunity to remind educators about the brilliant work they continue to do for their students.

'The conversations throughout the day highlighted how much education staff do to ensure they offer their students insights and opportunities to progress through their educational journey.

'There was a real sense of service throughout the day. It made me so proud to work within the education profession.'

'We were delighted to welcome Baasit alongside teachers, careers advisers and other guest speakers to our Supporting Progression Conference.

'By collaborating with colleagues and bringing in external perspectives, we hope to further develop prospects and opportunities for young people in our region.'

The conference also saw Emma Vincent, Deputy Director of Student Futures at Teesside University, share insight on the University’s award-winning Student Futures strategy and wealth of support and opportunities provided to students.

Ellie Rowley shared the latest updates from UCAS, promoting resources which education professionals can use to support their students through the process of applying to university.

From Student Finance England, Sammie Hutchinson provided an overview of student finance information for the next academic year and shared useful advice for students.

Simon Fairbanks, from UniTasterDays, offered additional insight into why young people should consider university.

Conference attendees also got an exclusive first look at Teesside University’s new state-of-the-art Digital Life building, which is due to open this spring.
