Video appeal to pregnant smokers

27 June 2001

Volunteers are needed to review a self-help video, designed to motivate pregnant women to reduce or quit smoking.

The University of Teesside is seeking pregnant volunteers who live in the Teesside area, and wish to reduce or quit smoking.

Last year the Middlesbrough-based University investigated the types of health advice, information and support currently available to pregnant women with regard to smoking. The results were incorporated into a new self-help video.

Volunteers are now sought to evaluate the video, which offers practical advice and information on quitting smoking, from planning and preparation, to dealing with cravings and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The University’s School of Health is undertaking the project with support from midwives and doctors working for the Maternity Service in Teesside, and funding from the Tees Health Action Zone. South Tees Nursing and Paramedical Research Advisory Group and North Tees and Hartlepool Local Research Ethics Committees have also given full ethical approval.

Anyone interested in volunteering or wishing to receive further information about the project, should contact Marian McDonald or Rebecca Ware on freephone 0800 052 6155, or e-mail Marian.McDonald@tees.ac.uk or Rebecca.Ware@tees.ac.uk, or fax 01642 384123. Volunteers are not required to pay any costs.
