Giorgia, 23, secured a CSI role with Cleveland Police while completing her BSc (Hons) Crime Scene Science degree.

She said: “I have always had an interest in policing and criminal investigation, and I was particularly drawn to the practical side of crime scene work. The degree felt perfect for me as it combines scientific knowledge with real-world investigation skills, which is exactly what I wanted from a career.

“I knew I wanted a role where no two days would be the same and where the work I do could make a meaningful difference. Teesside University stood out to me as I had not come across anywhere else offering this course or the hands-on experience and placement opportunities. I also liked how closely aligned the course felt with real careers in the forensic and policing world.

“Growing up I was always inspired by my family members, including my sister and my dad, working within the policing and the criminal justice system. My dad served as a police officer in the Metropolitan Police, before working with Cleveland Police, which naturally sparked my interest in policing and crime scene investigation from a young age.

“Completing my placement with Cleveland Police made that ambition feel even more real and being able to work there whilst my dad was still serving was a special full circle moment."

She added: “I really enjoyed the practical elements of the course. Being able to put the theory we had learned into realistic scenarios made everything feel much more engaging and helped prepare me for the realities of professional practice.

“My main goal was always to become a Crime Scene Investigator, so to have already achieved that before graduating feels incredibly rewarding.

“My placement year with Cleveland Police was a huge turning point for me. It gave me the chance to put everything I had learned into practice, build confidence and gain real-world experience. During my placement, a permanent CSI position became available and after interviewing, I was fortunate enough to be offered the role. Without the opportunities the course gave me, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Giorgia added: “The forensic facilities at Teesside were a huge part of my experience, particularly the crime scene houses used during practical sessions, which allowed us to apply our learning in realistic scenarios. The laboratory facilities were also excellent, with high-quality professional environments that really reflected industry standards. Teesside offers such a wide range of facilities, all of which really supported both the academic and practical sides of my degree.

“What I enjoyed most about my time at Teesside was how much the experience helped my grow. Over the past four years, I have gained so much knowledge, developed lots of skills and built the confidence that helped me become the person I am today.

“I have been so lucky to meet some amazing people along the way, from friends I have shared the experience, to lecturers with specialist industry experience, whose knowledge and support have been invaluable.”
