Free comedy course aims to uncover new talent

People across Teesside are being invited to try their hand at stand-up comedy as part of a new free course in Middlesbrough.

The beginners' comedy course has been organised by Dr Claire Sedgwick, Senior Impact and Engagement Manager at Teesside University, as part of a research project exploring the links between art and comedy.

The initiative comes in response to the UK Live Comedy Sector Survey 2025, which found that the North East has one of the lowest numbers of comedy performers in the UK.

The course is made up of three sessions, which are open to anyone interested in developing comedy and performance skills, regardless of experience.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore how comedy can be used as a creative tool, develop material and learn the fundamentals of stand-up performance in a supportive environment.

There will be a special showcase event at the end of the course where participants can perform in front of friends and family.

The course is free, and funding is available to reimburse travel costs, helping to widen participation.

Dr Sedgwick said: "Comedy is a powerful art form that helps people connect, share experiences and tell stories in unique ways.

“This project aims to explore the relationship between art and comedy while encouraging more people in our region to get involved in performance and creative expression.

“We hope this course will help build confidence, support emerging talent and inspire people to discover a new creative outlet."

The comedy course is funded through an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Impact Acceleration Account project, which supports researchers to develop activities that engage with communities.

Sessions will take place at the Old Fire Station, M;iddlesbrough Town Hall, on 10 October, 7 November and 12 December, from 10.00am to 1.00pm.
