Professor Kossay Alahamdy, President of the University of Mosul, was welcomed to the region to discuss potential collaborations and examine how Teesside University could help the University of Mosul to rebuild its academic and research programmes and become a model for Net-zero and decarbonisation in Iraq and the Middle East.

The University of Mosul is a well-known public university in Iraq, and was previously one of the largest educational and research centres in the Middle East until it was destroyed during the conflict in 2014. Since its re-establishment in 2017, the University of Mosul has been working hard to rebuild its academic and research programmes.

During his visit to Teesside University, Professor Alahamdy met with Professor Steve Cummings, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), to explore areas of mutual interest and potential collaborations between the two universities.

Both institutions have agreed to work together to develop joint initiatives, academic programmes and partnerships. Teesside University will also support the University of Mosul in achieving its goals for decarbonisation.

Professor Cummings said: “I was delighted to welcome Professor Alahamdy to Teesside University to explore potential collaboration opportunities.

We are keen to work alongside international partners on efforts to ensure a just transition, which supports levelling-up and economic development.

“International cooperation is an important part of a thriving research culture and Teesside University is pleased to work alongside colleagues from the University of Mosul to help support re-establishment of their academic and research programmes.

“Central to this are our shared ambitions around net zero and decarbonisation. As Teesside looks ahead to the opening of our £13.1m Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre, we are keen to work alongside international partners on efforts to ensure a just transition, which supports levelling-up and economic development.”

Professor Alahamdy expressed his gratitude for the warm welcome he received at Teesside University and emphasised the importance of collaboration between universities in different parts of the world.

During his visit, he also met with the Dean of the School of Computing, Engineering & Digital Technologies (SCEDT), Professor Chrisina Jayne and other staff members to discuss collaborative opportunities.

Dr Al-Greer, an Associate Professor at Teesside University who facilitated this visit, said it marked an important step towards strengthening academic ties between the two universities and promoting international cooperation in higher education and research.
