Why Teesside?

With a history department of leading experts in my field of study, Teesside was the ideal choice for my research interests. My research was supervised by one of the foremost scholars of 20th-century Ireland and I had expert guidance, endless generosity and support.

Best thing about your course?

To be able to dedicate three years to a subject I am deeply passionate about. I gained a diverse array of richly transferrable knowledge and skills, as well as forging friendships and the opportunity to research and contribute to academic conferences internationally. Me and my colleague also organised a conference for early career researchers and I have since had research published in several leading peer-reviewed academic journals, including the University of Cambridge's Historical Journal and Brill's Journal of Comparative Fascist Studies.

What did you think about the campus and services?

The Library, teaching and IT facilities are outstanding. There is a distinctive friendly, welcoming and supportive culture among the staff at Teesside which makes a very pleasant student experience. The quality of the academic staff is second to none and my supervisory team consistently went above and beyond the call of duty to support me.

Did you receive any financial support from Teesside University?

I was lucky to receive a monthly stipend for the duration of my studies. Without this, I wouldn’t have been able to pursue my research interests at doctoral level. I will always be tremendously grateful to the University for supporting my research financially.

What are you doing now?

Following my studies, I was awarded a traineeship in communications at the European Commission Representation in Ireland. I now work full-time in the Irish civil service in a job I love.

Did your time here help you to achieve or get closer to your goals?

Undoubtedly. The skills and knowledge from my PhD have proved crucial in securing these goals. The communications sector in international and public service organisations is immensely competitive and the qualifications and references from Teesside helped to distinguish me as a candidate.

Would you recommend Teesside?

Unhesitatingly, yes. You will always be supported in your research and provided with the guidance and resources needed to ensure you succeed.
