Core modules
Advanced Project Planning and Visualisation
In this module you explore engineering project planning problems and solutions. You develop your skills and knowledge of the key concepts, tools and emerging technologies used in traditional and advanced project planning.. In particular, you familiarise with principles of multi-constraints project planning techniques, and advanced 4D visualisation techniques.
Digital Engineering and Technology Management
This module provides an advanced understanding of digital engineering concepts, model-based system design, and the management of enabling technologies within modern engineering organisations.
You will explore how digital tools, such as Digital Twins, AR/VR/MR platforms, cloud-based engineering solutions, big data systems, and simulation software, support engineering design, operational performance, and strategic decision-making.
Undertake an independent research project addressing a real-world sustainability or clean energy challenge. This project enables you to apply advanced research methods, technical analysis, and critical evaluation to produce industry-relevant solutions.
Engineering Systems, Maintenance and Asset Management
This module provides advanced knowledge of engineering systems performance, maintenance strategies, and asset management frameworks used across industrial sectors including manufacturing, energy, transport, and construction.
You will explore how engineering assets are planned, assessed, monitored, and optimised through systematic maintenance planning, performance analysis, and lifecycle-based decision making. Sustainability and circular economy principles are embedded throughout the module to reflect modern engineering practice and global policy drivers.
Logistics and Global Supply Chain Management
You develop a broad understanding of operational research and systems dynamics methods applicable to the analysis of logistics and global supply chain management operations within both the private and public sector. Further, the module will introduce spreadsheet-based simulation methods and will afford the student opportunity to develop theoretical and applied knowledge in logistics and supply chain management.
Quality, Health, Safety and Environment
The module provides an understanding of the aims, responsibilities and means to achieve effective Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) management systems in Oil and Gas related organisations.
This module presents a number of core and specialist areas appropriate for effective management of QHSE in a successful oil and gas related organisation. Critical components of Safety Management (including a QHSE plan, process safety, hazard identification, safety auditing and managing risk) form a comprehensive part of the core study underpinning the total Safety Management System (SMS). Where appropriate, actual industry examples are used as case studies to enhance the students’ learning and to demonstrate the mechanisms used, and impact of, legal and administrative compliance. Further, the relevance of occupational health and safety and also sustainability in safety are discussed in terms of best industry practice.
The importance of implementing a Total Quality Management (TQM) system and the impact on the industry/organisation will be emphasised to students. Environmental drives and current issues, including an Environmental Impact Assessment will complete this part of the programme content.
We provide you with an advanced level of study in project risk management. You explore a range of tools and techniques used in risk identification, qualitative and quantitative risk analysis, risk-planning responses, PERT and risk monitoring. You learn about financial risk, project-appraisal methods and the application of a decision tree within a project.
You gain awareness of probability theory that represents the corner stone of risk management. Invited speakers from the industry give an overview of risk management in different projects; for example IT, finance, construction, and oil and gas. You work in groups on project case studies which apply risk management theory. In addition, you gain hands-on experience in applying the @RISK© tool to a variety of scenarios of risk factors. You develop a deep understanding of the systematic process of risk management and application of @RISK© software.
Modules offered may vary.
How you learn
Your learning is supported through our online learning environment, where experienced academic staff provide guidance, feedback and academic support throughout your studies. Opportunities to interact with staff and fellow students enable collaborative learning, helping you develop technical knowledge, professional skills and confidence within a supportive online community.
You learn through recorded and live online lectures, interactive tutorials, case studies and applied learning activities that reflect current engineering management practice. Critical reflection is embedded throughout the programme, supporting effective problem-solving, informed decision-making and innovative thinking.
You engage with authentic engineering scenarios through project-based learning, simulations and industry-focused case studies, enabling you to apply theory to professional practice. Independent study is supported by high-quality digital learning resources and structured academic supervision, particularly during the Engineering Research Project, where you undertake an in-depth investigation into a topic relevant to your professional interests.
How you are assessed
Assessment methods include coursework assignments, practical tasks, presentations, reports and, where appropriate, examinations/test.
The Master’s project is assessed through a written report and presentation.
Entry requirements
You need a first degree in engineering, engineering technology or a closely related discipline equivalent to at least a UK second class (2.2) honours degree.
We may consider applications on an individual basis from students with relevant professional qualifications and/or significant industrial experience in engineering or a related field.
Applications with non-standard qualifications or non-traditional backgrounds are encouraged. We may consider alternative qualifications and relevant professional or experiential learning through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
Students with a degree awarded outside the UK must also meet the University's minimum English language requirements.
