Teesside takes top two trophies

08 August 2002

Two students from the University of Teesside have clinched the top two places in a National computer competition.

Martyn Davies and Arron Cupid both entered the Student Design Awards web design competition, which challenged students from around the UK to create a working, on-line website featuring a portfolio of their work. The competition aimed to encourage student website designers in developing new concepts for websites, and prevent the Internet from becoming stagnant and repetitive.

First prize was claimed by Martyn Davies, 21, from Evesham, a recent BA (Honours) Graphic Design graduate. He received a new I-Mac computer, a week’s work experience with North Shields web design firm Live Room, a certificate and a commemorative plaque. Martyn said: “The competition was a great way to design a website because the content was our course work and was already taken care of. The challenge was to present the information in a new and innovative manner. My site, www.culturaldesign.co.uk, is based around varying the ways of showing my work through, for example, ‘Post-It Notes’ and doodles. So, for instance, to see a selection of my photographic work, the web surfer need only click on the relevant ‘Post-It Note’ on the screen. The site actually works in a similar manner to many other sites, but is very fast and looks a lot better!”

The second prize went to Arron Cupid, age 27, from Cumbria. Arron, a HND Multimedia graduate and self employed multi-media trainer, received a certificate and a bottle of champagne. Arron said: “My site, www.arroncupid.co.uk, uses a dynamic menu, which unlike a lot of sites allows the user to arrange the menu as they please. I’m really pleased that the site was rated highly by the judges and I hope other web surfers enjoy it as well.”
