Emma climbs the design beanstalk

08 August 2002

University of Teesside BA (Honours) Graphic Design graduate Emma Jameson has enjoyed a successful year, by clinching £250 for third place in a national book design competition.

Emma, 21, from Peterlee, won third place in the Macmillan children’s book competition in May. Her entry evolved over two months, and focused on ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Emma has produced her own illustrated version of the story, placing an emphasis on scale by contrasting images of Jack with the giant.

Emma said: “I selected ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ as it’s a story that everybody knows, I remember it well from my days at infants school. I was so pleased to win; I couldn’t believe it and I’ll be spending the money on a summer holiday. The skills I’ve learned during my three-year course at Teesside helped me to succeed. Undertaking projects in design areas such as typography, illustration and multimedia has given me a vision for the future.”
