Combining a bachelors degree with boxing

07 January 2005

Combining full-time employment and full time study is never an easy task, but University of Teesside student Francis Jones’ job comes with its own unique physical challenges – he is a professional boxer.

Undefeated in 12 fights (ten wins, two draws), welterweight (67 kg) Francis trains out of the Fannon Gym in Hartlepool, while also studying for a BSc (Hons) degree in Sport and Exercise (Coaching Science).

Francis, 23, from Darlington, said: “I begin most days with a seven or eight mile run, followed by University and then it’s to the gym for training or sparring. It’s tough but worth it - I should be looking at a title fight within the next year and I really want to see how far I can make it in this sport.

“But I know boxing can’t last for ever and when I have to leave it behind, there might not be very much on offer for me. I decided to do the degree to better myself and give me options after the boxing career comes to an end. It’s a demanding course, learning about the psychology of sport, nutrition and exercise principles, but I really enjoy it. I think I’d like to lecture in sport after the boxing is through, and I’m aiming to go on to do a Masters.

“There are times when I’d like to be able to socialise more with the other students, things like going for a drink, or playing football, but I’ve got to keep focused on the boxing and studying. The equipment here is excellent, especially the new Olympia Building. You can get as much help as you need – the lecturers are always around.”

Francis lives with his Grandmother Mary, who he calls “the best Nana in the world”, and will graduate from his degree in summer 2005.
